Occupation

Sonia Maria Sotomayor is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving since August 2009. The nation's first Hispanic U.S. Supreme Court justice ended her first year voting mostly with liberals--siding with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg more than any other justice. Her first major opinion was to dissent in the court's ruling on a Miranda rights case; the majority determined a man who remained silent for two hours of questioning waived his right to remain silent when he answered "yes" to a detective asking if he had prayed to God for forgiveness for a murder.

Achievements

She has the distinction of being its first justice of Hispanic heritage, the first Latina, its third female justice, and its twelfth Roman Catholic justice. In 1984, Sotomayor entered private practice, making partner at the commercial litigation firm Pavia & Harcourt, where she specialized in intellectual property litigation. She moved from associate to partner at the firm in 1988. While she climbed the ladder there, Sotomayor also served on the board of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, the New York City Campaign Finance Board and the State of New York Mortgage Agency.
